Mahjong 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Game

Mahjong 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Game

Whether you’ve been watching your friends play with curiosity, or you’ve heard the buzz around our playdates and pop-ups, one thing is clear—Mahjong is having a moment. And if you’re feeling called to the table, this post is your official invitation. Welcome to Mahjong 101, where we’ll break down the basics so you can show up with confidence and (maybe!) call your first “Mahjong!”

What Is Mahjong, Anyway?

Mahjong is a tile-based game that originated in China and has evolved into several versions around the world. The American version—what we play—is a four-player game involving skill, strategy, and a little luck, using 152 tiles, a scorecard from the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), and plenty of snacks and good vibes if you’re at one of our events.

Think of it as a mix of rummy, poker, and puzzle-solving—all wrapped in a super social experience.

The Mahjong Tile Breakdown

Before you start playing, you’ll want to get familiar with the different types of tiles:

Dots (Circles)

Bams (Bamboo)

Craks (Characters)

Winds (North, South, East, West)

Dragons (Red, Green, White)

Flowers & Jokers

Each hand you play will be a unique combination of these tiles, based on the year’s official NMJL card.

What You’ll Need to Play

Here’s your starter kit:

A Mahjong set with tiles, racks, and dice (check out our Giving Tiles!)

A 2025 NMJL Scorecard (updated annually!)

3 friends ready to learn or laugh with you

A sense of humor—because yes, you will mess up your first few games, and that’s part of the fun!

How Does a Game Work?

Without diving too deep (we’ve got a post coming for that!), here’s the flow:

1. Each player starts with 13 tiles.

2. Players take turns drawing and discarding to build one of the winning hands on the card.

3. Jokers can substitute for tiles in most hands—except singles and pairs!

4. The first person to complete their hand yells “Mahjong!” and the game ends.

What’s With the Card?

The NMJL card is basically the blueprint for every hand you’ll try to make. It’s released once a year and contains dozens of potential combinations. It’s like your secret weapon—and yes, everyone is allowed to look at it while they play!

Mahjong Etiquette for Newbies

Don’t stress if you’re slow—everyone was new once.

Ask questions! Most players love to teach.

Keep the table chill: We’re here to have fun, not to win championships.

Bring snacks, good energy, and maybe a cute Mahjong tote 😉

🧡 You Don’t Have to Know It All to Start

The best way to learn is just to sit down and play. Seriously. You’ll pick it up faster than you think—and we promise you’ll be hooked. Whether you’re looking for a creative outlet, a new friend group, or just an excuse to get out of the house once a week, Mahjong might be just what you need.
